7 Signs It Might Be Time for Couples Therapy
By Aaron Brantley · May 20, 2026
Most couples don’t wake up one day and decide their marriage is in trouble. It happens slowly. A few unresolved fights turn into a pattern. A little distance turns into a habit. By the time most couples call, they’ve lived with the same problems for two or three years.
You don’t have to be in crisis to start. The earlier you come in, the easier the work. Here are seven signs it’s time.
1. You have the same fight over and over
Different trigger, same ending. One of you shuts down. The other pushes harder. Nothing gets resolved. When a fight keeps repeating, the problem isn’t the topic. It’s the cycle underneath it.
2. You feel more like roommates than partners
You run the house well. You’re good parents. But the closeness you had early on has faded, and neither of you can say when.
3. One of you has checked out
Maybe it’s obvious. Maybe it’s just a feeling. Either way, the distance feels different from the normal ups and downs, and it’s getting harder to ignore.
4. Something broke the trust
An affair. A loss. A move. A decision that changed everything. Sometimes one event ruptures the relationship, and you need help deciding whether and how to move forward. If infidelity is what brought you here, affair recovery is its own kind of work, and there’s a path through it.
5. You avoid certain topics
There are subjects you both know to leave alone, because they always end badly. The list keeps growing. So does the distance.
6. You keep score
When resentment builds, small things start to look like evidence. You tally who did what, who’s more tired, who gave more. That usually means one of you doesn’t feel valued.
7. You wonder if this is just how it is
This is the big one. If you’ve quietly settled for a marriage that feels like less than you hoped for, that’s exactly what couples therapy is for.
What to do next
If any of these sound like you, you can fix it. Couples therapy isn’t about deciding who’s right. It’s about seeing the pattern you’re both stuck in and finding the way out together.
We see couples in person in Provo and Springville, and online across Utah. If something feels off between you, that’s reason enough to reach out. Call or text anytime. The earlier you start, the easier the work.
