It was never really about the dishes
You start out talking about something small. The dishes, the calendar, a tone of voice. Ten minutes later you’re somewhere you’ve both been a hundred times, saying things you’ll regret, and the original problem is long forgotten.
That’s the thing about a recurring fight. The topic changes, but the pattern doesn’t. One of you pushes to settle it now. The other goes quiet and pulls away. The harder one chases, the further the other retreats — and you both walk away feeling like the person you married doesn’t hear you.
Marriage communication counseling in Utah Valley starts here: not with who’s right, but with the loop that keeps catching you both.
The cycle underneath the fight
Most couples don’t have a hundred problems. They have one or two, dressed up in different clothes, run through the same broken pattern. Therapists call it the pursue-and-withdraw cycle. You’d call it Tuesday.
The partner who pursues isn’t trying to start a fight — they’re trying to reconnect, and pushing is the only tool that feels available. The partner who withdraws isn’t cold — they’re flooded, and going quiet is how they keep from making it worse. Both moves make sense. Together they keep you stuck.
Underneath, the Gottman Method points to four habits that quietly corrode a marriage: criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling — the Four Horsemen. Most couples slip into at least one without noticing. The good news is that each one has an antidote, and they can be learned.
What changes in marriage communication counseling
We don’t hand you a script or a list of rules to memorize. We work on the live pattern between you, so you can catch it in the moment instead of only seeing it in the wreckage afterward.
You get heard
We slow the conversation down enough that each of you can say what you actually mean and feel the other person take it in. That alone changes the temperature of a marriage.
You learn to fight fair
Conflict isn’t the enemy — every strong marriage has it. We help you raise hard things without contempt, stay in the room instead of stonewalling, and disagree without it turning into a war.
You learn to repair
Every couple ruptures. The ones who last are the ones who repair well. We teach you how to come back after a blowup — how to soften, own your part, and reset — so a bad night doesn’t become a bad month.
This work is grounded in the Gottman Method, which I’m Level 2 trained in. It gives us researched, practical tools instead of vague advice to "communicate better."
You’re not bad at marriage. You’re stuck in a pattern.
It’s easy to decide one of you is the problem. You’re not. You’re two people who love each other running a cycle neither of you chose, and patterns can be changed once you can see them.
Sometimes communication is the whole job. Sometimes it opens onto something bigger, and we move into full couples therapy. And if the fights have broken trust — if there’s been a betrayal underneath the arguing — our affair recovery work meets you there. Wherever you are, the first step is the same. Reach out and we’ll find a time soon.
Faith, conflict, and being understood
In Utah Valley, how a couple fights often carries the weight of what they believe. If faith is part of your marriage, I’m glad to work within your values — no sermons, no judgment — and if it isn’t central for you, you’re welcome exactly as you are.
How we start
- 1
Call or text
Tell me about the fight you keep having. I’ll help you make sense of it and find a time soon.
- 2
Come in together
We map the cycle that catches you both — no blame, no picking a winner — and name what’s really going on.
- 3
Break the loop
We give you concrete Gottman tools to get heard, fight fair, and repair so the same fight stops running your marriage.
Common questions
How is this different from general couples therapy?
Couples therapy covers the whole relationship. Communication counseling zeroes in on how the two of you talk and fight — the cycle that turns a small thing into a three-day standoff. We work directly on that pattern, using Gottman tools to help you slow down, get heard, and repair. If bigger issues surface, we widen the lens into full couples therapy.
We have the same fight over and over. Can that change?
Yes. When a fight repeats, it’s rarely about the topic — it’s the cycle underneath it. One of you pushes for resolution, the other pulls back, and you both end up further apart. Once you can see the pattern in the moment, you can step out of it. That’s most of the work, and it’s learnable.
What if one of us shuts down and the other won’t let it go?
That’s the pursue-and-withdraw cycle, and it’s one of the most common patterns we see. The one who shuts down isn’t cold, and the one who keeps pushing isn’t crazy. You’re each reacting to feeling unheard. We give you a way to break the loop instead of blaming each other for it.
Do you work from a faith perspective?
Yes. If faith is part of your marriage, I’ll work within your values — no sermons. If it isn’t, you’re just as welcome.
Is there marriage communication counseling near me in Utah Valley?
Yes. We meet in person at Coronado Wellness in Provo and Springville, and online anywhere in Utah. Plenty of couples do this work online so they can practice in the room where the real conversations happen.
You don’t have to win the same fight again.
You just have to take the next step. Call or text and we’ll break the cycle together.
